Challenge
Northern Trust Bank, a leader in international banking and portfolio management services, depends heavily upon a secure, employee Intranet, available to employees across all regions and banking divisions. The Intranet houses thousands of tools, applications, documents and information sources - each built with separate requirements, access rights and design formats. Employees often struggled with locating information or understanding where to find a particular tool or application within the vast Intranet tool. Northern Trust needed to develop an 'Enterprise Desktop' applicable to all employees in all business units, which would serve as a gateway into the Intranet and assist users in finding information quickly and efficiently. Many requirements had been gathered, but efficient desktop design was needed.

Solution
In addition to conducting focus group sessions and usability tests to assist in gathering requirements for the new desktop, Flair consultants worked closely with the Northern Trust team to implement many of the proposed recommendations including: portlet design, information and content structure, search techniques and search engine improvement, information display and use of functional tools such as drop-down menus, check boxes, radio buttons and other functional techniques. All components were designed and developed using established style and design guidelines, brand guidelines and existing technical foundation. The project launched on time and on budget and enabled Northern Trust to establish a foundation for future development and improvements.
