Enterprise Desktop Usability Testing

Project Name: Enterprise Desktop Usability Testing
Client: Northern Trust
Services Provided: Usability Testing

Challenge
Northern Trust Bank, a leader in international banking and portfolio management services, depends heavily upon a secure, employee Intranet, available to employees across all regions and banking divisions. The Intranet houses thousands of tools, applications, documents and information sources - each built with separate requirements, access rights and design formats. Employees often struggled with locating information or understanding where to find a particular tool or application within the vast Intranet tool. Northern Trust needed to develop an 'Enterprise Desktop' applicable to all employees in all business units, which would serve as a gateway into the Intranet and assist users in finding information quickly and efficiently. Many requirements had been gathered, but efficient desktop design was needed. Flair Interactive Services worked closely with Northern Trust to prepare a 'test' version of the proposed Enterprise Desktop, and conducted a series of usability tests to probe employees on their needs, preferences and desires for the new desktop tools.

Solution
Using proven usability test methods and methodology, expert Flair consultants planned, developed and prepared test questions, exercises and testing tasks, and conducted multiple usability and focus group testing sessions in the United States and in the United Kingdom. The Flair team documented and analyzed test results and prepared a usability test report and a series of recommendations for Northern Trust which were used in the development and decision-making for the Enterprise Desktop design with great success, saving Northern Trust countless hours and budget dollars in redevelopment and redesign. The results from the Flair usability testing continue to be referenced as ongoing decisions and Intranet development continue, spanning all business units.
