Project Name: McDonald's Intranet Redesign
Client: McDonald's
Services Provided: Information Architecture, Content Strategy, Content Management
Challenge
McDonald's, a global leader in franchise restaurants, operates in over 60 countries around
the world. Many restaurants are owned by owner-operators and franchisees with access to many of
McDonald's global resources including Marketing, Restaurant Operations, Real Estate Development,
Human Resources, Worldwide Training, Learning and Development, and Quality among others. Because the network of owner-operators is so vast, and
information so dense, McDonald's struggled with developing an Intranet that would serve all groups
and all needs. An Intranet redesign was needed, including the implementation of a content management
system (CMS) to aid in maintenance efficiency and ensure consistency across sites. Considerations such
as multiple language options, connection speed within other countries, personalization and customized
information and other factors made the redesign of their Intranet a unique challenge.
Solution
We worked closely with stakeholders across every department within the corporate office to
identify requirements, understand and manage existing content and systems and develop a taxonomy and
content migration plan that included training and instruction for the dozens of content managers who
maintain site content on a daily basis. In addition to providing content strategy services, Flair also
worked with the project team to develop the Information Architecture that would form the foundation of the
site's structure and design. The project launched in many phases over time, lasting nearly 3 years.
McDonald's now enjoys a true 'global' Intranet and has saved countless dollars in site maintenance and
training costs.
